Travel Insurance Basics To Be Risk Free During Trips

Written on May 15, 2008

For those who are not familiar with travel insurance, there are some basics that should be known by anyone interested in traveling abroad. Travel insurance is important because when you are in a foreign country, sometimes you are on your own and any unexpected expenses due to accidents or illnesses will come from your pocket. With Travel insurance that money can be reimbursed.

Though travel insurance also covers trips within one's own country, the whole policy has been thought for those who travel abroad. Nevertheless if you are a frequent traveler it is important to be familiar with this particular insurance policy as the coverage will protect you and save you from hassles more than often, especially given the current situation of all national and international transportation systems.

What Is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is an agreement between you and your insurance company by which the insurance company is obliged to cover all the losses that you may incur during a trip abroad or while travelling on one's own country. In exchange for that coverage the insured pays a premium either in a single or multiple installments.

When Do I Get It?

Travel insurance can be purchased jointly with the ticket and other products when booking your trip but in that case, the insurance policy will only cover that particular trip. Thus, for frequent travelers there are more broad permanent travel insurances that protect you during all your trips that meet certain requirements. This type of travel insurance can be purchased directly from insurance companies but also from travel agents or travel companies.

What Does It Cover?

When it comes to flights the most common risks that are covered by travel insurance are: cancellations, limitations, delays, etc. When it comes to the luggage, theft, damage, delay or lose of personal possessions up to a certain amount when undeclared and up to any amount when declared and included in the policy.

It will also cover for medical expenses whether due to illness or accident. This includes transportation to and from hospitals and clinics, physicians' fees, medications, etc.

In the event of death it will cover funeral expenses and benefits for accidental death for the beneficiary of the insurance. The policy also includes often injury or disablement benefits either for the insured or the beneficiary.

As regards to legal coverage, travel insurance can include legal fees, and personal liability for accidents where you are held responsible. It can also include additional coverage in case other insurances like car rental insurance does not cover all the liability.

Additional Protections

Though the above enumeration includes the basics of travel insurance coverage, there are additional costs that travel insurance may include in the coverage. Moreover, there are other risks for which insurance can be purchased jointly or separately from a regular travel insurance contract.

Examples of the above are: high risk destinations, high risk activities (sports), etc. Whether these risks are included within the travel insurance policy or not will depend on where you purchase it. If you buy a travel package to a high risk destination, chances are that the policy will already contain those clauses, the same is applicable if you hire all the services needed to perform the high risk activities from the same agent. However, you should carefully read the policy before committing to anything and make sure that you are sufficiently protected.
