Senior Support - Family Touching Family
Written on August 20, 2008
One of the biggest fears confronting those who are approaching old age is the loss of friends and loved ones who have been with them throughout their lives. Losing someone close is difficult at any time, but when one is struggling with the infirmities which aging brings, any loss of support is magnified. Senior support is essential to help the elderly enjoy their lives.
Senior support is more than a matter of having senior housing and assistance. Elderly people will not thrive without the emotional connectedness that only family and friends can provide. Anyone who is feeling helpless and vulnerable longs for a friendly hand extended in support, and knowing that someone you love and trust is ready with financial or emotional support can make the difference between a peaceful old age and a terrifying one. Senior support does not have to be an overwhelming effort.
While the residents of senior living communities often attempt support one another, many of them still long for senior support from the families to whom they have devoted their lives. If those families will respond with the deep and lasting senior support to which their elderly relatives are entitled, the entire aging experience can be transformed from unbearable to acceptable.
How can You Offer Senior Support?
If you decide to offer senior support to the seniors in your life, accept that you may be making a long-term commitment. Do only as much as you know you can continue to do until your senior support is no longer required; allowing your elderly relatives to develop unrealistic expectations about the extent of the senior support you can give them will only lead to disappointment, and even resentment.
But the senior support you do provide, provide lovingly and with no strings attached. You are only giving back what they gave to you when were young enough to need their support.
What IS Senior Support?
What does giving senior support entail? It can be as simple as a phone call, a visit which last long enough for you to have a real conversation and tune in to any unspoken needs, an afternoon sharing family photographs and reminiscing, or an afternoon out to a favorite place. Kind words and hugs can often do more than you know.
Senior support, while it can include financial assistance, does not have to. It also doesnt have to include the kind of physical assistance with simple tasks that the staffs at senior care facilities provide. At its core, senior support is letting your seniors know that the lives they lived have made a difference in yours, and that you will always be glad for having had them in your family.
