How to Build an Email List Part I

If you dont know to build an email list then you will find it difficult to really succeed in online marketing. Although the saying the money is in the list is now a bit trite, it is true that without a list you will not be able to promote new products to anybody but new customers.

A list is essential to your success, and is so important that your list building strategy should be built into your website design. It doesnt matter whether you are involved in affiliate marketing, sell your own products or provide a service rather than a product: a list is a necessary part of your armament. There are a few ways of organizing your website to collect names and addressers, but basically you need an opt-in form.

It is absolutely essential that those on your list have agreed to be there, and that they know what they are signing up for. It is very easy to be accused of spamming and you must be able to prove that every name and address on your list agreed to be there and also agreed that you can contact them.

So many people kept forgetting that they had signed up that it was necessary for the double opt-in system to be devised. This is a system whereby after filling in the initial form, the visitor is requested to confirm their registration by clicking on an emailed link. Even then there are still occasional problems, but it is easier to demonstrate that the listing was voluntary.

So where should you place your opt-in form, and what should it look like? You only really need a first name and email address, so a two-line opt-in form is sufficient. Some prefer a third line to confirm the email address and others like to include a captcha feature to ensure that only humans can register. However, the name and address are all that are necessary.
